AFS Projects continually work with pipeline operators by providing engineering services for the management of their assets in accordance with AS2885 and state-specific legislation. Support is provided over the entire life cycle of the asset whether it be from the development of the initial Pipeline Management System or the Pipeline Abandonment Plan. AFS Projects have experience in a varied range of product from natural gas, to oil variants (crude, aviation fuel etc.) to LPG.

EXAMPLE: Caltex Consequence Modelling

As part of Caltex’s scheduled pipeline Safety Management Studies, AFS Projects were asked to carry out consequence modelling for their Sydney Metropolitan and Sydney Newcastle oil pipelines. The consequence modelling involved using complex software to generate radiation contours and flow rates to determine the consequence of failure events.

EXAMPLE: APA ALARP Assessments

As a result of a major infrastructure project encroaching on one of APA’s transmission pipelines, AFS Projects were engaged to carry out formal ALARP assessments for a number of threats to demonstrate that the level of controls applied were adequate.

To help support these assessments, AFS Projects carried out Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), being a semi-quantitative tool for analysing and assessing risk. It uses an order of magnitude technique to evaluate the adequacy of existing or proposed layers of controls against the potential threat.

EXAMPLE: Viva Energy Pipeline Abandonment Plan

AFS Projects were engaged to develop an Abandonment Plan for one of Viva Energy’s suspended pipelines.

EXAMPLE: Elgas Pipeline Management System (PMS)

AFS Projects were engaged by Elgas for a periodic review of the Pipeline Management System (PMS) for their LPG transmission pipeline. The scope comprised of either developing or completely revising the following documents:

Safety Management Plan
Pipeline Integrity Plan
Pipeline Repair Plan
Emergency Response Plan

Furthermore, AFS Projects developed a number of Fitness for Service (FFS) calculations for the assessment of pipeline defects.

AFS Projects were involved in discussions with the regulator for the approval of the revised PMS.
